WAIBOP Matarau hit the court for a must win fourth round, but a shaky start made the challenge steeper. A high error first quarter saw Matarau trail 20–7 at the first break . Some strong words and clear direction at the quarter break reignited the fire, and Matarau responded with purpose lifting their intensity to take the second quarter 18–14. Despite the improved performance, they still trailed Marvels 34–25 at halftime.
Magic’s Kate Taylor made her presence known at GS through the second and third quarters, while Reeghan de Bono brought spark and intensity, first at WD then WA in the final half. Matarau maintained their momentum in the third quarter taking it 13–9, narrowing the Marvels lead 43-38 going into the break.
The last quarter was a nail-biter. Matarau gave it everything, taking the quarter 16–12 with gutsy defence, relentless attack and a couple of well timed two point shots from Grace Namana. But time was not on their side and the final score was Marvels 55, Matarau 54 - a one goal heartbreak.
With one final game remaining against Blast in Invercargill next week, Matarau are ready to bring their best. The team is focused on finishing the season with pride, purpose, and a well-earned win.
