WBOP Matarau have claimed a hard-fought 57-52 win over the Southern Blast in Round 2 of the National Netball League, following a tightly contested battle at the Edgar Centre, Dunedin.
The match was close from the outset, with both sides trading goals and momentum throughout the opening quarter. Matarau held a narrow 14-13 lead at the first break, a pattern that continued into the second quarter as neither team managed to create separation.
At halftime, WBOP Matarau led 26-25 in a game defined by fine margins.
The third quarter remained equally competitive, with both teams capitalising on opportunities and maintaining strong defensive pressure. Matarau edged ahead again to lead 40-38 heading into the final quarter, with the result still well within reach for either side.
With the margin staying within three goals for much of the match, the decisive moment came late in the fourth quarter. Nearing the 55-minute mark, WBOP Matarau lifted, applying strong defensive pressure and converting key chances to finally build a buffer.
Their effort across the full 60 minutes saw them close out the game with a five-goal victory.
It was a match that demanded sustained intensity throughout, and WBOP Matarau will be thrilled to come away with the win after such a competitive contest.
They now shift focus to Round 3, where they will face the Comets on Saturday 30 May at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton.
