WBOP Matarau were defeated 47–76 by a strong Central Manawa side in Round 4 of the National Netball League, with Central Manawa delivering a commanding performance across all four quarters. Central Manawa utilised their full roster throughout the match, making multiple substitutions that kept sustained pressure and fresh intensity on WBOP Matarau. Their depth and experience proved a key factor as they steadily extended their lead at each break.
WBOP Matarau faced an early setback, with experienced player Kenza Taele forced to leave the court in the first quarter due to a lower leg injury and unable to return. Despite this disruption, Matarau showed resilience and continued to contest with a high work rate for the full 60 minutes.
Young players Anika Pihema and Jasmine Davis, both in their debut National Netball League season, made a positive impact when introduced, bringing speed and energy to the game. Their contributions highlighted the team’s developing depth and versatility but despite periods of great play, WBOP Matarau were unable to halt Central Manawa’s momentum.
At quarter time, Matarau trailed 11–19, with the margin extending to 23–39 at halftime. Manawa continued to build their advantage through the third quarter to lead 58–36, before closing out the match to secure a 76–47 win.
The 2026 Netball NZ National Netball League features a six-team single round robin format, with final placings determined by competition points. After four of five rounds, WBOP Matarau sit third on the ladder, keeping a potential top-three finish alive heading into the final round.
The current standings see Mainland leading the competition undefeated on 16 points, followed by Central Manawa on 13 points. WBOP Matarau and Comets are equal on 8 points, with WBOP Matarau holding third position on goal percentage. Southern Blast sit fifth on 6 points, while Northern Marvels are yet to record a win this season.
WBOP Matarau now turn their attention to their final match of the campaign against Northern Marvels this Saturday 13 June at 5:00pm at The Trusts Arena in Waitākere, in what will be a crucial fixture to determine their final placing.
