WBOP Matarau closed out their 2026 National Netball League campaign with a hard-fought 75–59 victory over Northern Marvels, securing third place overall in a high-quality contest that showcased skill and determination from both teams.
After a tightly contested opening, Matarau edged ahead late in the first quarter and maintained their advantage for the remainder of the match. The Marvels applied pressure throughout, challenging Matarau across the court and forcing them to remain composed under intensity. Notably, three Marvels players went on to be part of the Mystics ANZ Premiership team that faced AVIS Magic later that night, underlining the depth and resilience of the opposition.
Matarau responded with one of their most controlled performances of the season. They showed improved ball security and discipline, reducing turnovers compared to previous matches and retaining possession in key phases. Their ability to remain calm under pressure proved pivotal in absorbing the Marvels’ surges.
A crucial difference came through Matarau’s effectiveness in the two-point period, where they converted multiple long-range shots to gradually extend their lead.
Training partners Poppy Kilworth and Kaziah Riley-Rata made the most of their opportunity as replacement players, both delivering strong performances in the wing attack role.
Experienced campaigners Grace Walsh and Reeghan de Bono were both instrumental with dominant performances. Their steadiness and execution helped guide the team through periods of pressure, while also supporting the growth and confidence of younger players around them.
The match remained competitive throughout the opening three quarters, with Matarau holding a narrow 16–14 lead at the first break and extending it to 36–30 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Matarau had edged slightly further ahead at 53–48, before producing a strong final quarter to pull away and secure a convincing 75–59 win.
This result concludes the five-game Synergy Hair National League 2026 season, with WBOP Matarau finishing third overall following a competitive and promising campaign.
