After two weeks travelling away, Round 8 saw the WaiBOP team make their first appearance at their new home venue, The Peak, against the Northern Comets.
WaiBOP welcomed three Magic players into the team this week, with Lisa Mather, Amorangi Malesala and Katherine Levien named in the playing 10. With the inclusion of the Northern Stars defender Kate Burley in the Comets side, this game promised skilful and exciting netball.
In front of a great crowd, both teams started the game with intensity and focus. The game went goal for goal for the first five minutes, before an intercept to Ali Wilshier at Centre saw the WaiBOP team make a break, going on to score 5 goals in a row. Excellent shooting by Kelsey McPhee, saw the WaiBOP team increase their lead even further towards the end of the quarter. Quarter score: 20-13 to WaiBOP.
In the second quarter, strong team defence by WaiBOP smothered the Comets attack and built pressure throughout the court. Excellent pressure by the defence pairing of Tong and Lyanne Eukaliti paid off and turnover ball was quickly transitioned onto attack and finished off by sharp shooters McPhee and Amorangi Malesala. WaiBOP extended their lead from the first quarter and half time saw WaiBOP ahead by 14 goals. Half Time Score: 39-25
The third quarter was more even. Comets regrouped at the half time break and came out on to court very determined. WaiBOP took some time to adjust to changes made out on court and at times passes did not make their intended target. However, Wilshier at Centre and Simmon Howe at WA were impressive with their footwork and feeding into their shooters. Three Quarter Score: 53-39
The last quarter saw Harley Smith enter the game for WaiBOP at GA. Tong continued her outstanding game at GK, taking 4 intercepts in the quarter and combining well with Katherine Levien. This possession was transitioned effectively on to attack and the Wilshier and Howe continued to display both flair and vision on attack, feeding quality ball into the shooters, McPhee and Smith. Final Score 66-50
