After a loss last weekend, Round 7 saw a determined WaiBOP Beko team travel to the Trust Arena in Waitakere, to take on the Northern Marvels team. With the end of the round robin rapidly approaching, every game is vitally important to all teams.

WaiBOP began the game with a slightly different lineup from previous games, with Khiarna Williams given her first start at GS.  Williams impressed with her athleticism, skill and composure under pressure, shooting 15/15 at 100%, despite some close attention from the Marvels defenders.  Williams combined beautifully with Harley Smith at GA and the midcourt combination of Ali Wilshier and Simmon Howe.  Quarter score: 16-13

Marvels fought back in the 2nd quarter, with the experience of Mystics player Tera-Maria Amani at GS, combining well with Mystics training partners, Tori Kolose and Mererangi Paul.  WaiBOP were at times guilty of not making the right decisions on attack and not converting valuable turnovers.  Half time score: 24-25 to Marvels.

In the 3rd quarter WaiBOP made several changes, bringing on Kelsey McPhee at GS, Amorangi Malesala at GA and Georgia Tong into GK, highlighting the fact that they have strength across all 10 players in their team. WaiBOP settled quickly to the changes and produced some high quality passages of play, both on attack and defence, with Magic player Amorangi Malesala shooting 100%.

Quarter Score: 42-37

Up 5 goals heading into the last quarter, the WaiBOP team showed the ability that they have to close out the game under pressure. The game went goal for goal for much of the last quarter, with both teams showing how much they wanted the win. Marvels were not going down without a fight and at the end of the game had closed the gap to 3 goals, however it was WaiBOP that came away with the valuable four points.
