This week’s game was a top of the table clash between WBOP and Mainland. WBOP travelled away, down to Christchurch and then on to Ashburton.

In front of a loud and vocal crowd of over 500 people, the game lived up to expectation.

WBOP made a great start to the game, going out to an 8-2 lead, with excellent passages of play on attack and defence securing lots of possession.  However, Mainland showed why they are sitting near the top of the table, and worked hard to close the gap back to even.  A goal for goal quarter ended with WBOP ahead 16-15.

The second quarter saw an increase in intensity and physicality.  Both teams had excellent passages of play and it was another close quarter.  Mainland worked hard to win the quarter by 5, taking the lead at half time 32-28.

A fired up WBOP team took to the court in the 3rd quarter.  Jenna O’Sullivan, Lyanne Eukaliti and Georgia Tong worked together well in defence, to secure valuable possession.  Ali Wilshier at C showed excellent vision and linked well with shooter Kelsey McPhee, who continued with her dominance in the shooting circle – WBOP taking the quarter 17-11, to lead at ¾ time, 45-43.

The last quarter was a torrid battle, with both teams lifting the intensity even further.  The score went goal for goal for much of the quarter, before Mainland gained important possessions in their defensive end.  WBOP fought hard to the end of the quarter, but were unable to finish the game in the way they would have wanted.  Final score 61-54 to Mainland.

These two teams remain at the top of the table and with the re-match taking place next Sunday at Rotorua Girls High School, WBOP will be working hard to ensure this game has a different outcome.
