Round 10 saw the WaiBOP Beko side host the Northern Marvels from Auckland for the final home game of the season at the wonderful facilities at Tokoroa Events Centre. The Marvels had everything to play for going into their final game of the season and the WaiBOP Beko side needed a win to confirm their opportunity for a finals spot.

The first quarter saw the WaiBOP team settle into their combinations with slick connections on attack and relentless defence that not only turned over ball but intimidated the Marvels shooting duo.  Marvels came back from a slump to be within 3 goals and WaiBOP finished the first quarter on top 16-13.

The second quarter saw the introduction of Khiarna Williams at GS. She caught anything fed to her showing her reliability and strong aerial play. This would not have been showcased had it not been for the precision feeding from Simmon Howe and Ali Wilshier who hit the circle edge with speed and turned the Marvels defenders inside out.  WaiBOP went to half time still close but with greater confidence in their attacking rhythm. The 2nd quarter was won 17-13.

The third quarter saw the introduction of Lyanne Eukaliti at WD  and Georgia Tong at GK for WaiBOP.  Lyanne came straight off a week at the NNZ U19 competition where she represented Hamilton City and was named in the tournament team.  Georgia made immediate impact through her ability to attack the ballside and then take high baseline ball.  Harley Smith  and Simmon Howe took charge of sinking the Marvels defence with deception and hard drives, WaiBOP won the quarter 15-13.

The fourth quarter saw Hannah Ridling move into GD.  This was an exceptional team performance across the court.  The attacking play opened up with Harley Smith contributing a massive workload to lead for ball or set up space for Khiarna Williams.  Hannah Ridling combined well with WD, Emily Patterson and Centre Ali Wilshier to mount big defensive pressure on the Marvels feeders who more often than not had nowhere to go.  To finish the fourth quarter with high momentum shows the WaiBOP 2018 campaign has got a number of performance attributes right - namely fitness, injury prevention and team leadership. The game plan shows a well-oiled machine with still more to come.  WaiBOP won the final stanza 24-10.

Final Score 72 – 49
Player of the Match: Harley Smith

The Beko final will be played on the 29th of July at the Pulman Arena in South Auckland – let’s get the WaiBOP bus rolling to support our Beko team!!
