Round 3 saw the Waikato Bay of Plenty Beko Netball League side travel away for the first time, heading north to take on the Northern Comets at the new ANZ Premiership venue, the Bruce Pulman Arena.
The team for this game included two changes, with Magic player Amorangi Malesala and Beko Netball League Squad member Kiani Stevenson included in the side.
A nervous start to the game saw the Comets jump out to a 4-0 lead, however once the WaiBOP team settled, they quickly pulled back this lead and began to dominate the quarter. Georgia Tong was impressive with 4 intercepts, which was quickly finished off at the other end by both Malesala and Kelsey McPhee. Quarter Time Score 19-14.
The second quarter saw a much more settled WaiBOP team, from the opening whistle. Slick passing and great vision into the circle from the midcourt pairing of Simmon Howe and Ali Wilshier, saw the shooters receiving quality ball, which they finished off well. At the other end of court, the WaiBOP defensive pairing, Georgia Tong and Jenna O’Sullivan worked tirelessly against the excellent shooting duo for the Northern Comets of Ivana Rowland and Filda Vui. Half Time Score: 38-26
The third quarter saw the introduction of Khiarna Williams into GA and Hannah Ridling into GK. Ridling was impressive, reading play and attacking ball, taking 5 intercepts in the quarter. Khiarna Williams settled well into her first start at GA and showed excellent vision into the circle as well as shooting 6/7 = 86%. She was supported well by Kelsey McPhee who shot 13/16 = 81% for the quarter. 3rd Quarter Score: 57-37.
The final quarter saw Kiani Stevenson take the court at WD, for her WaiBOP Beko debut. Stevenson had a good outing, picking up two intercepts in the quarter and bringing energy to the court. The WaiBOP side did not take the foot off the pedal and there were impressive passages of play, both on attack and defence. Full time score: 70-46
Simmon Howe was named the Player of the Match for her work out on court, a well-deserved award, It was also announced that this was the highest number of goals ever scored by a team in the three years of the Beko Netball League competition.
