WBOP Matarau opened their 2026 National Netball League (NNL) campaign with a positive and hard-fought performance against Mainland, going down 49-66 at the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub in Christchurch. The match showed promising connections, emerging talent, and resilient team spirit from start to finish.
WBOP Matarau burst out of the blocks with confidence and intent, setting the tone early with sharp ball movement and strong defensive pressure. Their strong opening saw them take an 8-4 lead midway through the first quarter, with the combination of experienced heads and fresh faces clicking nicely across the court.
Communication was a key strength, allowing the team to transition smoothly through phases of play and apply pressure in both attack and defence.
As the quarter progressed, Mainland began to settle into their rhythm, closing the margin and capitalising on scoring opportunities. In particular, Mainland goal shooter Te Ata Hassan proved influential, landing multiple two-point shots in the closing minutes of both the first and second quarters to give her team confidence heading into halftime.
WBOP Matarau welcomed the return of Grace Walsh, who has been training and playing with premiership team AVIS Magic as temporary injury cover. Her experience and composure added valuable stability, helping guide the team’s structure and flow.
After halftime, Mainland built momentum and extended their lead with a run of unanswered goals after the break, but WBOP Matarau stayed composed and committed.
Debutant Amelia Burton delivered an exciting performance at goal defence, finishing with eight gains and four deflections, while Reeghan de Bono worked tirelessly at wing attack, taking 30 centre pass receives and providing a steady link through the court.
WBOP Matarau showed real resilience in the final quarter, matching Mainland 16-16 and finishing the game with a consistent work rate and positive intent. Seamless changes and strong team cohesion were evident throughout.
The match was streamed live on Netball New Zealand’s YouTube channel with commentary from Yvonne Willering and Kieran Bingham, giving fans at home a great opportunity to follow the action. View the game here.
While there is still work to do, the performance reflected a group building nicely, with a balance of experience and emerging talent.
WBOP Matarau now look ahead to Round 2, where they will face Southern Blast on Saturday 23 May at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin.
