The Netball Waikato Bay of Plenty Zone (NWBOP) is committed to leading the growth and development of our game through Poipoia – Netball in New Zealand’s strategic framework.
Our goal is to connect with all people of all ages; to promote the game of netball; develop and upskill players; stage and manage events; support the courage, drive, and aspirations of young people to succeed and reach their potential, not only in playing but in all facets of the game.
There are approximately 27,000 netballers, coaches, umpires, and officials located throughout the regions of Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne. NWBOP connects and works with 23 Netball Centres and participants throughout the Zone to support and develop the delivery network for Netball to meet the needs of local communities.
About the Role
This is a full-time position offering a dynamic and engaging opportunity within our team. While the role is designed as full-time, we are open to considering part-time arrangements for the right candidate, depending on experience and fit.
As the Umpire Lead, you will be responsible for leading, coordinating, and delivering all umpire and technical official development across the NWBOP Zone. You’ll work closely with Centres, umpires, umpire coaches, and umpire coach developers to grow capability, retain participants, and create clear pathways from grassroots to the highest levels.
Your key priorities will include:
- Leading the delivery of the NWBOP Zone Umpire Development Plan aligned with NNZ strategies.
- Supporting and building Centre capability to recruit, develop, and retain umpires and umpire coaches.
- Coordinating regional development opportunities, including workshops, forums, tournaments, and theory registrations.
- Promoting junior and youth umpiring programmes, including futureFERNS Year 5&6 and positive sideline behaviour initiatives.
- Maintaining accurate databases and sharing best practice across the Zone and nationally.
- Identifying and supporting umpires, umpire coaches, and bench officials pursuing higher levels.
About You
We’re looking for someone with:
- Proven experience in sport or netball development, preferably with a focus on umpiring and/or umpire coaching.
- Strong relationship-building skills across diverse stakeholders.
- The ability to lead change, inspire collaboration, and deliver results.
- Excellent planning, organisational, and communication skills.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
