Round 2 saw the young Waikato Bay of Plenty side at home against last year’s champions, Central.

This game was the first experience for many of the players to play in a televised match, as well as being the curtain raiser to an ANZ Premiership game.

WaiBOP again started the match impressively.  The midcourt combination of Ali Wilshier and Simmon Howe had great understanding and were able to effectively feed shooters, Kelsey McPhee and Khiarna Williams.  At the other end of the court, Jenna O’Sullivan and Lyanne Euakliti were picking up intercepts and forcing errors from the Central attacking end.  Quarter score: 19-14

Central came storming back in the 2nd quarter and showed how they managed 12 wins in a row in last season’s league.  WaiBOP struggled to adapt to the physicality of the game at times, which led to poor decision making on attack.  The Central shooting pair of Saviour Tui and Jermaine Howard-Vallance were shooting with high accuracy, fed well by ANZ player Mila Reuelu-Buchanan.  Half time score: 32-33.

In the 3rd quarter Wai BOP introduced Georgia Tong to the game, at GK.  She made an immediate impact, taking the first intercept of the quarter.  WaiBOP began to settle again in the quarter and the game showed high quality passages of play from both teams.  An injury to WD Lyanne Eukaliti, saw the re-introduction of Emily Patterson, who worked tirelessly on defence, Quarter Score: 43-48

Down 5 goals heading into the last quarter, the WaiBOP team showed the determination that they have and their never give up attitude.  The introduction of Jaydi Taylor-Chaffey at WD provided energy and intensity in her first game in the Beko League. WaiBOP scored the first 5 goals of the quarter to draw even 48-48.  The game then went goal for goal for much of the last quarter, before defensive pressure from Jenna O’Sullivan and Georgia Tong snaffled valuable possession of the ball.  This was finished off superbly by Khiarna Williams and the Player of the Match, Kelsey McPhee, who finished the game with 44/51 attempts at 86% shooting. A fantastic fight back by the WaiBOP side, to take the game by 4 goals.

Final Score: 60-56
