It was great to start the season off today, with an anticipated tough match against South.  After a long and hard pre-season, the players were excited to display all their skills and learnings out on court.

WaiBop started the game extremely well.   Kelsey McPhee at GS and Harley Smith at GA combined well to score 16 of their 17 attempts.  At the other end of the court, Lisa Mather was disrupting the South flow and Hannah Ridling was attacking lots of ball.  First quarter score: 16-7.

In the second quarter, South came out firing.  WaiBop went away from the game plan at times and lost the links and connections that were working so well in the first quarter. Quarter score: 6-12.

Changes made at half time, introducing Khiarna Williams into GS, Emily Patterson into WD and Lyanne Eukaliti at GD, brought fresh legs to the court.  Midcourters Simmon Howe and Lisa Mather worked hard to provide quality ball in to the circle, which was finished nicely by the shooters, led by Magic training partner Harley Smith. Quarter score: 13-8.

The final quarter was a tough battle.  Both teams left it all out on court, with a high standard of skills on display.  Khiarna Williams showed why she has been included in the team at only 15 years of age, shooting 9/11 in the quarter, from all over the circle. Quarter score 12-12.

A great first effort by the WaiBop team coming away with the win 47-39.

Coaches MJ Araroa and Rebecca Gabel were pleased with the efforts out on court today, but are also mindful that there is still room for improvement from this team, and are very excited by the potential.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:

It was great to meet a lot of the families after the match, with a shared lunch.  It allowed our WaiBop whānau to all introduce themselves and for families to begin to get to know each other.  Many of our families had travelled from out of town (Napier, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay) which we know was appreciated by their daughters.
