MATCH SUMMARY:

After a loss to Mainland last weekend, the WaiBOP side were looking to reverse the result this week, in the Round 5 rematch, held at Rotorua Girls High School.

Similar to last week’s game WaiBOP were fast out of the blocks, with some excellent timing and cohesion on attack, taking a 6-1 lead. Unlike last week’s game, WaiBOP were able to build upon this lead in the first quarter with strong links through court and sharp shooting. The game was being played at a fast pace with WaiBOP taking the first quarter 20-12.

In the second quarter, strong team defence by WaiBOP smothered the Mainland attack and built pressure throughout the court.  Excellent intercepts taken by the defence, were quickly transitioned onto attack and finished off by sharp shooters Kelsey McPhee and Harley Smith. Mainland however kept fighting and rallied at the end of the quarter, scoring the last five goals of the quarter, in a row. However, WaiBOP was still able to extend their lead to twelve at half time.  Half time score: 37-25

The third quarter saw a more even battle out on court.  Mainland regrouped at the half time break and came out on to court in the third quarter very determined. WaiBOP were guilty at times of forcing passes and not adjusting to the Mainland defensive strategy.  Another run of five goals in a row saw Mainland close the gap, reducing WaiBOP’s lead to 9 goals at three quarter time.

3rd Quarter Score: 50-41 to WaiBOP.

In the final quarter, WaiBOP came out determined to finish the game off in a convincing manner. The defensive unit of Georgia Tong, Jenna O’Sullivan and Emily Patterson worked hard to upset the Mainland rhythm on attack, picking up intercepts and any loose ball out on court.  This possession was transitioned effectively on to attack and the midcourt pairing of Ali Wilshier and Simmon Howe displayed both flair and vision on attack, feeding quality ball into the shooters, McPhee and Smith, who both impressed with their movement and accuracy.

Final Score: 66-50 to WaiBOP
